FORT WORTH -- D'Lynda Crossett glances wearily at the stacks and racks of prom dresses.

In the past few days, the high school junior has tried on nearly 200.

Baby blue. Hot pink. Traditional black. Chocolate brown. Lace. Satin. Long. Short.

She's tired. So is her mom, Susan.

It's Saturday, and prom at Southwest Christian High School in Fort Worth is in one week.

"I put it off a little too long," D'Lynda admits.

Finding the perfect gown is merely one part of the lengthy prom-planning process. For many in this generation, the traditional American high school spring formal has risen to new heights of extravagance. Limousines. New shoes. Tuxedos. Dinner. Makeup. Fancy hairstyles. Nails. The list goes on. And the cost goes up.

But the dress, that is the centerpiece.

D'Lynda is not sure what she's looking for, but she'll know it when she sees ...
