After sitting in the dugout most of the hot and windy afternoon, one of the last things Alex Kruse wanted to be doing Saturday was playing for third place at the Class 5A baseball tournament.

Particularly considering Kruse is a Bishop Carroll senior who tasted a state championship last season and anticipated going out on a high note.

"I was definitely running low on energy," Kruse said, "and it's hard to come back after pointing so much to win state."

But that didn't keep him from pitching strong into the sixth inning to help the Golden Eagles overtake Arkansas City, 8-6, for third at the Hummer Sports Complex.
